T H E D I G G E R - Vintage Custom Bike

The Digger first started to appear in the early 70s in the chopper world and it is often credited to be first built by Arlen Ness (back then Ness built cool bikes). The style that makes a chopper a digger is typically a long and low look. Other common this you will see are diamond and hexagon shaped gas tanks (which are usually long and long gas tanks as well), drag pipe exhaust, and large old school style drag wheels.
Notice the long and low look on this Arlen Ness digger.
To get the long and low look for the digger, they were usually built with low gooseneck frames and would have a big rake to the front fork. The frames usually have backbones that have been chopped so they can be lengthend for the long look.
Pink Taco has the longer frame to give it is digger look
Some people say the style was influenced by the drag bikes of era and they were meant to resemble dragbikes.  The main story of it is Arlen Ness attended a drag bike event in the early 70′s where he saw a bunch of Harley sportsters. This give Arlen Ness an Idea, take a sportster, chop the backbone to lengthen the frame, put a longer rake on, add a diamond shape tank and add a 70s style drag tire.
Here he and she are inspired by drag bikes. Notice the Diamond gas tank.
The origin of why its named the digger has its own story as well. My guess of why it’s called the digger is because it’s based of a drag bike and back then dragsters were known as diggers so it is a digger stylebike. The other story I have heard is because of how low they are (though not as low as a lowrider) they looked like they were digging into the ground so they name digger was given.
Thanks to Arlen Ness diggers grow in popularity through out the 70s and become some of the bestchoppers ever built.  Diggers still seem to have a strong influence on modern choppers today! They may have been on of the two influences for pro street choppers (the other was pro street hot rods).

Kimi Raikkonen's Bike - 120hp and 100.000 Euro

Sure, you may think that racing Formula 1 in the Championship-winning Ferrari is pretty hardcore, but Kimi Räikkönen has an even better idea of what being hardcore really means. Or not. Whatever... what we do know is that Marcus Walz of Hardcore Cycles has made Räikkönen another bike. The first one was known as "Iceman", and the second has been imaginatively named "Iceman 2". The machine itself is pretty cool, although the basic premise of the machine is decidedly low-tech. Sure, it's got a single-sided swingarm, but no rear suspension to speak of. The fork may be high-tech, but it's placed at such an angle as to undermine its operation.

All of the preceding is beside the point, however. This bike is not meant to out-handle a Supermoto or out-race a GSXR. It's meant to be as much about style as function, and the rider is expected to show it off whenever possible. Good thing the bike looks so good, then. And when Kimi wants to go fast... that's not so much of a problem either.

Harley-Davidson motorcycle swept away by Japan tsunami to be preserved in museum

A Japanese man’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle that washed up on the shores of western Canada more than a year after it was swept away by the devastating tsunami will be preserved in a Harley museum in the U.S.

The 2004 FXSTB Softail Night Train motorcycle will be permanently housed in the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wis., as a memorial to the victims of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which swamped several coastal towns in northeastern Japan and left more than 15,000 people dead.

“It is truly amazing that my Harley-Davidson motorcycle was recovered in Canada after drifting for more than a year,” said the bike’s owner, Ikuo Yokoyama, in a press release issued Friday by Deeley Harley-Davidson, the Canadian distributor of Harleys. “I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to Peter Mark, the finder of my motorcycle. Due to circumstances caused by the disaster, I have been so far unable to visit him in Canada to convey my gratitude.”

Mark found the motorcycle, still bearing its Japanese license plate, while driving his ATV on an isolated beach on Graham Island on the west coast of British Columbia on April 18. The bike, along with several other items, was inside a rusted cargo van container that apparently drifted more than 4,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean.

“You just never know what you’re going to stumble upon when you go for a drive, and lo and behold you just come across something that’s out of this world,” Mark told CBC at the time.

The motorcycle was eventually traced to the 29-year-old Yokoyama.

The tsunami destroyed Yokoyama’s home in Miyagi prefecture and also claimed the lives of three family members, according to Japanese media reports. Yokoyama currently lives in temporary housing in Miyagi prefecture.

He said the motorcycle was being kept in a storage container behind his house when the tsunami struck.

The Harley will soon be transported to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.
Harley-Davidson offered to return the rust-encrusted bike to him and to restore it to running condition but Yokoyama respectfully declined, the company said.

“Since the motorcycle was recovered, I have discussed with many people about what to do with it. I would be delighted if it could be preserved in its current condition and exhibited to the many visitors to the Harley Davidson Museum as a memorial to a tragedy that claimed thousands of lives,” Yokoyama was quoted as saying in Friday’s press release.

Harley-Davidson has offered to fly him to visit the museum and meet Marks, the Canadian who retrieved the bike. Yokoyama said he would like to do so “when things have calmed down.”

“My heart really goes out to Ikuo Yokoyama and all the survivors of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami for everything that was taken from them. I cannot even begin to comprehend the loss of family, friends, and community,” Mark was quoted by Harley-Davidson as saying. “I think it is fitting that the Harley, which was swept across the Pacific Ocean by the tsunami, will end up in the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to that tragic event. It has an interesting and powerful story to convey preserved in its current state.”

The motorcycle has since been transferred to a Harley dealership in Vancouver. Plans for its transportation to the Harley museum are being developed.

Celebrity and Motorcycles - David Beckham and Cafè Racer

David Beckham took his vintage cafe racer motorcycle out for a ride in West Hollywood.

The sexy father of five, wearing rolled up brown pants and boots, mugged for our cameras while cruising around on his sleek and sexy hog. We're loving how he carries his yellow baseball cap in his back pocket so he can avoid helmet head. Good thinking!

Beckham already owns a collection of bikes including a pricey F131 Hellcat Combat motorcycle. Looking this hot, Becks definitely knows how to get our motors running in overdrive.

Celebrity & Motorcycles - Steven Tyler's Red Wing Motorcycles

Like many celebrities, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, has a love of motorcycles. Tyler has decided to turn his love into a business by launching Red Wing Motorcycles, a new collaboration with Mark Dirico and AC Custom Motorcycles. Each motorcycle has a Harley Davidson engine and is hand signed by Tyler. He describes the bikes as " sick, rugged, and just damn cool." Tyler seems to be doing more than just lending his name to the project, he even blogs on the Red Wing Motorcycles Web site.

The custom cycles have a vintage feel. Each bike is hand built by the team at AC Custom Motorcycles. The bikes can be seen at Manchester and Nashua, N.H. Harley Davidson dealerships and a national roll out is planned for 2008.

Celebrity and Motorcycles - Brad Pitt's Bobbers

Actor Brad Pitt certainly loves his motorcycles (as does his wife Jolie) but some of his coolest two machines are his bobbers. His collection of custom Bobbers are all based around Harley Davidson motors and you can be sure they weren't cheap to build.  No one can deny the guy certainly has plenty of style and good taste.
